Description
This is the General Release Quad poster for this 1968 Beatles film (for reference purposes we also show images of the Teaser posters too). The Beatles were obligated to Universal Pictures for a 3rd film (following "A Hard Day's Night" 1964 & "Help" 1965) but after the critical failure of their TV film "A Magical Mystery Tour" (1967) they backed the idea of an animated feature & "Yellow Submarine" was born. The film featured a mix of previously recorded songs & new material written specially. The Beatles voices were dubbed by actors, though they did appear in person in a small cameo section at the end. The film itself was a tour de force of imagination embracing the psychedelic influences of the time. However, contrary to popular myth, the team of designers & artists (directed by Bob Balser & Jack Stokes) who worked on the film were not all under the influence! This poster is a highly collectable piece, appealing not only to the film poster cognoscenti but to Beatles fans alike. A range of illustrators worked on the animated art for the film (thanks to Sim Branaghan - "British Film Posters" 2006 - for pointing out that one of the illustrators was Ted Lewis who simultaneously was working on his novel "Jack's Return Home" - the book that was the inspiration behind "Get Carter"). This poster has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
