Description
After a slew of Westerns, Clint Eastwood diversified with this enjoyable WWII romp. Richard Burton co-headed the line-up & the film enjoyed considerable commercial success. This was one of many 1960's-70's films to be based on the the writings of novelist Alistair MacLean (other notables including "The Satan Bug", "The Guns of Navarone", "Puppet On A Chain", "When Eight Bells Toll" etc). The poster design capitalises on the popularity of the two leads, the action sequence making the overall appeal of the film quite clear. The identity of the artist for the Quad Poster is debatable. The US 1-Sheet poster (shown here courtesy of filmposters.com) has been variously credited to both Howard Terpning & Frank McCarthy, though the balance of opinion favours Terpning. The Quad, however, is more likely to be by McCarthy so is credited (with caveats) as such. For an exhaustive plethora of detail about the making of "Where Eagles Dare", please refer to the superb limited edition 116-page special on the film published by "Cinema Retro" in 2009. The poster has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
