Description
The Alamo is one of the classic “Western” genre posters & although the genre has lost some of the support it had 20-30 years ago, this is one of the standout Quad designs. The artwork is by the American artist Reynold Brown. Brown is perhaps best known for his illustrations of the classic Scifi movies “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” & “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman”. In his depiction of the Alamo, Brown focuses on the climatic scene, with John Wayne (as Davy Crocket) battling against the Mexican hordes. There has been much discussion about the historical accuracy of The Alamo film but what is undeniable is that the film as a symbolic struggle for freedom has seeped into the American collective consciousness. The subject holds a fascination for many & it is well known that one of the biggest collectors of Alamo memorabilia (& now a considerable authority himself) is the Rock star Phil Collins. For many years Reynold Brown’s Alamo artwork was exhibited inside the Alamo in San Antonio. The poster has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
