Description
A great piece of poster illustration for this 1966 John Frankenheimer Drama about Grand Prix motor racing. Archive footage & extensive filming at Brands Hatch comprised the racing scenes. Many regard this as the best film ever made about motor racing. James Garner was apparently the only actor to drive himself in the film, at one point reaching a speed of 140 mph at Monza (for more information, see "Cars In Films" by Buckley & Roberts 2002). Frankenheimer utilised a split-screen technique for portions of the film, something which either heightens your sense of excitement or gives you a headache. In Japan this concept was incorporated into promotional designs in such a way to mimic the chequered flag but the UK Quad design takes a more conventional approach. The use of a reflected image in the driver's gogles is a device that appears on a number of British Quads ("Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" 1974 & "Pink Cadillac" 1989 being just 2 examples). This poster is sometimes attributed to Chantrell but we believe this is incorrect. The poster has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
